RRCA State Championship Race
The 2012 Scenic City Half Marathon has been designated as the Road Runners Club of America (RRCA) State Championship Event for Tennessee. State Championship plaques will be awarded to top overall, master, grandmaster, and senior grandmaser male and female half marathon winners.
Registration
Registration is now closed - the race has met its registration cap.
Registrations are non-refundable and non-transferable.
However, a Half Marathon registered participant may switch to the 5K race.
No Race Day Registration
There will be no race day registration.
Packet Pickup
Packets, including your bib number, timing chip, and technical shirt can be picked up:
- Friday February 24 from 4 pm to 8 pm (EST) at the Crystal Room off the lobby of the Chattanooga Choo Choo Hotel and Convention Center at 1400 Market St. or
- Saturday February 25 from 6:30 am to 7:30 am (EST) at the Tennessee Pavilion which is adjacent to the start/finish location and Finley Stadium.
Race Course
The half marathon course has been certified by the USTAF (certification number TN08007MS).
The half marathon course will start and finish in downtown Chattanooga at Finley Stadium, home of the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga Mocs Football and Lady Mocs Soccer
From there it will run towards the river and business district along Riverside Drive and then along the Tennessee River via Amnicola Highway.
After turning around, the course will run back along the scenic Tennessee Riverwalk for 4 miles, passing marshes, river views and wildlife sanctuaries. Runners will then continue through the historic Bluff Art District and past the Hunter Museum.
The course then proceeds over the Walnut Street Pedestrian Bridge and enters the Chattanooga North Shore district. After passing the local shops and restaurants on Frazier Avenue, the route crosses back over the river on the Veterans Bridge.
The course continues past Ross’ Landing and the Tennessee Aquarium towards the finish and the First Tennessee Pavilion, home of Chattanooga’s Farmers market.
There is a 3.5 hour time limit on finishing the half marathon.
Start Rules
- All half marathon participants start at about 8:00 AM
- Walkers are welcome but must start at the back of the pack.
- Volunteers with mile pace times will help position runners at the start.
Aid Stations & Bathrooms
Aid stations containing water and sports drinks will be available approximately every two miles on the half marathon course. Portalets will be available at about mile 4. Tennessee River Park bathrooms will be open and are located at about mile 7 and mile 8.5.
Time Limit
The time limit for the half marathon is 3.5 hours. Half Marathoners must maintain a 17 minute 30 sec mile pace in order to stay ahead of street re-openings. Once the streets are re-opened and course support shut down, any remaining runners/walkers will need to move to the sidewalks.
Race Timing
The race will utilize IPICO timing chips that will be affixed to each racer’s shoe laces. Each runner will also receive a bib number to be worn during the race. The tear off strip on the bottom of the bib will be available as a backup to the timing system.
Runners will receive both a gun time and chip or net time. Per USATF Rule 245 all awards are based on gun times.
Results will be posted on this site as well as ChattanoogaTrackClub.org.
Awards
Awards will be given to the overall male and female winners, as well as the male and female masters (40+) and grandmasters (50+) winners. Awards will also be given to the top three finishers, both male and female, in the following age groups: 19 & Under, 20-24, 25-29, 30-34, 35-39, 40-44, 45-49, 50-54, 55-59, 60-64, 65 & Over. All awards will be based on “gun times”. No duplicate awards.
All finishers of the Scenic City Half Marathon will receive a finisher's medal.
Safety
Bicycles, skateboards, baby strollers/joggers, roller skates, animals, and headphones are not allowed in the race.
Weather
On average, Chattanooga's temperature on February 25th ranges from a low of 36 degrees to a high of 58 degrees. The record high for February 25th is 79 degrees (1930) while the record low is 6 degrees (1967).
